 About Singing Bowls

According to Tibetan oral tradition, singing bowls date back to the time of the historical Shakyamuni Buddha. This tradition began in Tibet and spread to the Himalayas in the 8th century A.D., along with the teachings of the Buddha.

Singing bowls create soothing sounds that help the body and mind relax. These sound vibrations often guide people into a meditative state naturally. Because of this calming effect, singing bowls are popular in meditation groups and relaxation practices.

Traditionally, Tibetan singing bowls are made from an alloy of seven metals: gold, silver, copper, brass, iron, tin, and lead. Some also include mercury. Each metal produces a unique tone and harmonic. When combined, they create the bowl’s distinctive singing sound. However, the metal proportions can vary from one bowl to another.

Beyond meditation, Tibetan singing bowls are also used for stress relief, chakra balancing, and holistic healing. Their harmonic tones influence the energy centers (chakras) of the body. With regular use, these sounds can help restore personal balance and harmony. Much like a well-tuned instrument pleases the ear, the singing bowl’s tones soothe the body, mind, and spirit.

In addition to healing, singing bowls serve as versatile musical instruments. Many musicians enjoy incorporating them into their work. You’ll hear them in jazz, hip-hop, world music, and even film scores. Whether used for personal growth or artistic expression, the joy of playing and listening to them is truly universal.
